Fascinated by the vast potential of the DSLR cameras, Chin Siang dived deep into the world of cinematography. Feeling liberated to explore the depths of this field, he used his Nikon D7000 and embarked on a journey to express his creativity. Now, he bands together with other passionate cinematographers who inspire him, crafting marvelous commercials and wedding videos. He shared with us his process in making heartfelt and yet impassioned wedding videos.
Chin Siang personally draws inspiration for his work in everyday life. Whether it’s something he’s seen in a movie, songs he’s recently listened to, speeches on the television or just random conversations with friends, these can all ignite creative concepts for him. However, the main source of his inspiration is his beloved team. With a joint belief in the themes of natural, elegance and timeless, the diverse innovations and ideas they present constantly fuels his creative processes.
When it comes to gear, Chin Siang owns a wide range of Nikon equipment. His go-to are the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G and AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G for the team recording the bride and the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G for the team with the groom. Besides that, he favors a macro lens to capture wedding details, and an ultra-wide lens such as the NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S or AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G for ambience shots.
Before the actual shoot, Chin Siang will advise the couple to “be themselves, be genuine.” Wedding cinematography should not be disruptive or intrusive, but instead complementing and following the schedule of the wedding. It’s their big day after all. By aligning with the client’s requests and stepping up to the plate to fulfill them, he strives to live up to their trust and deliver the ultimate experience.
On the actual day, his team will split into two teams, each following either the groom or the bride. Giving a personalised touch to the video is important, therefore filming starts even before the ceremony starts. From the bride’s makeup process, wedding preparations, interactions with family and friends or bridal parties, everything is crucial starting from the preparation phase. Multiple angles of the ceremony also give the video wider coverage and a more dynamic narrative.
At the end of the shoot, the team gets busy with post-production – from establishing the storyboard, to boosting the emotions and amplifying the ambience through color grading, music and proper scene sequencing. Each video is tailored to the wedding couple, to bring out the unique importance of such a special day for them.
Of course, things don’t always go as planned sometimes. Weddings are a one-time event, where not everything is predictable. The most common challenge is time. Looking to present the best product for the wedding couples, he works around this by ensuring clear communication with the photographers and vendors to have a clear understanding of the schedule, and making sure that they can get shots that are must-haves. Besides that, the weather may also be a tough customer. However, Chin Siang views rough weather conditions as opportunities instead, creating unique and breathtaking shots in those adverse situations.
For final words, Chin Siang once again shared the importance of working well with others, stating that one should “get a team, don’t do it alone”. As the saying goes, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
With a hefty 13 years of photography and cinematography experience, the Penangite Low Chin Siang seeks to provide the best experience to his clients through his work. Always delivering marvelous personalised and inspired wedding videos, he commemorates any couples’ special day splendidly.
